Telecom giant collaborates with tech firm to optimize real-time communication in Nigeria, 11 other markets
MTN Group has announced a strategic partnership with Meta to significantly improve voice and video call performance on WhatsApp and other real-time communication platforms across 12 African markets, including Nigeria.
Optimizing Network Performance for Digital Communication
The collaboration, initiated at Mobile World Congress 2024, focuses on refining the interaction between mobile networks and Over-the-Top (OTT) applications. By implementing application-aware network adjustments and network-aware application optimizations, the alliance aims to deliver smoother, higher-quality calls for millions of users.
Bridging the Divide Between Telcos and OTT Services
The partnership marks a notable shift in the often-tense relationship between telecom operators and OTT providers in Africa. Mobile network operators have long expressed concerns about revenue losses as subscribers increasingly prefer internet-based calls over traditional voice services.
MTN Nigeria’s Chief Technical Officer, Yahaya Ibrahim, stated:
“We’re pleased with the remarkable improvement in our real-time communication services, reflecting our commitment to innovative customer solutions.”
Measurable Improvements in Call Quality
Early implementations of the initiative have already shown enhanced call stability and network efficiency. Meta’s Head of Network Ecosystems Engineering, Diego Marí, emphasized the shared goal of elevating user experience:
“The collaboration allows us to deploy advanced solutions for an unparalleled real-time experience in Nigeria and showcases our dedication to elevating service quality while striving for continued efficiency in traffic delivery.”
