Nigeria’s tourism market is projected to grow by 11.23% between 2024 and 2029, but challenges such as climate change, insecurity, food shortages, ethnic tensions, and community clashes pose risks to this growth.
These issues were the focus of discussions as Nigeria joined the global celebration of World Tourism Day today.
In response to these concerns, United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, called for global unity in tackling these challenges. Delivering the official UN Tourism message in Abuja, Mrs. Ibiene Roberts, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Tourism, emphasized that unity can only be achieved through shared humanity.
Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Lola Ade-John, highlighted the importance of keeping discussions around the economic significance of tourism alive, as it plays a key role in promoting peace within communities.
The Ministry of Tourism, one of the newly created ministries under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, is focused on harnessing the sector’s full potential. Senator Anthony Ani, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tourism, pledged to support the industry through impactful policies.
Various stakeholders also contributed valuable insights to the ongoing discourse.
