Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has addressed the recent social media post by Nigerian cyclist Ese Ukpeseraye, who revealed she used a bicycle provided by German athletes at the Paris Olympics.
Senator Enoh stated that Ukpeseraye’s post appears to have been widely misunderstood, possibly due to a lack of context.
He explained that Team Nigeria initially qualified for one road race in cycling, for which they were adequately prepared with the necessary training and equipment.
The Sports Minister noted that the Sport’s Governing Body however allocated additional slots to Nigeria for the Kerin and individual sprint events.
This change according to him required different competition equipment, which, due to delivery times and payment processes, could not be acquired in time.
To enable Ukpeseraye to compete, Senator Enoh clarified that the Cycling Federation, through her European club and in collaboration with a German company, arranged for a track bike to be provided.
