The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 95 deaths from Lassa fever in 2025, with a case fatality rate of 18.8 percent. According to the agency’s latest situation report for epidemiological week 8, the number of new confirmed cases rose from 38 in the previous week to 54.
So far, 506 cases have been confirmed out of 2,492 suspected cases recorded this year. At least 12 states have reported confirmed cases, affecting 70 local government areas.
To contain the outbreak, the NCDC has activated the National Lassa Fever Incident Management System, which is coordinating a multi-sectoral response to curb further spread. The agency has urged Nigerians to maintain good hygiene practices and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, weakness, or unusual bleeding.
