Starting July 1, 2025, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources will begin strict enforcement of environmental laws, with fines of up to ₦250,000 or three months’ imprisonment for offenders.
Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab made the announcement on Wednesday via the government’s official X handle. He said the penalties would apply to individuals who illegally dump refuse, litter streets, or deface public spaces.
“Lagos will no longer tolerate deliberate environmental abuse,” Wahab stated. “This is about saving our environment for us and generations to come.”
He also confirmed that from July 1, the ban on single-use plastics would be fully enforced. Over 3,000 offenders have already been arrested, and the state is ramping up both surveillance and advocacy efforts.
Wahab reiterated that laws banning cart pushers, public defecation, and illegal street trading remain in effect. He urged residents to bag their waste properly and use assigned PSP operators for refuse disposal.
“Let’s celebrate the coming Sallah with cleanliness and responsibility,” he added.
