Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London hospital at the age of 82, will be laid to rest on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State confirmed the burial arrangements during a press briefing on Monday. According to him, the body of the late Nigerian leader will arrive in Katsina by noon on Tuesday and will be buried at 2:00 p.m. in Daura, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Radda, who spoke on behalf of the Katsina State government and its people, extended condolences to Buhari’s family and all Nigerians mourning the passing of the elder statesman.
Meanwhile, formalities are underway in London to facilitate the release of the former president’s remains. Channels Television’s UK correspondent, Juliana Olayinka, reported that documentation processes are being finalized at the hospital.
Earlier on Monday, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, arrived in London to receive the body on behalf of the Nigerian government. They were received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum.
Back home in Nigeria, Buhari’s Daura residence has become a gathering point for mourners, including neighbours, friends, and political associates. Many described the late leader as humble, disciplined, and deeply connected to his roots.
Sulaiman Yarin-Katsina, a longtime friend of Buhari, remarked: “His simplicity and humility kept him close to us even as President. He never lost his bond with the community.”
Despite the heavy security presence around the Daura Emirate Council and the late President’s residence, normal commercial activity continued along the town’s main roads.
Dignitaries who have visited the family home to pay their respects include Katsina Deputy Governor Faruk Jobe, APC State Chairman Sani Daura, Commissioner for Internal Security Nasiru Danmusa, former SUBEB Chairman Lawal Daura, and AIG Zone 14 Aliyu Musa.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1984 to 1985 and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, is being widely remembered for his dedication to national unity, discipline in governance, and strong character.
The Federal Government has ordered national flags flown at half-staff and plans to accord him full state honours.
