IGP Orders Immediate Withdrawal of Mobile Police from VIP Duties to Tackle Rising Insecurity

Date:

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has mandated the immediate recall of Mobile Police (MOPOL) officers from unauthorized VIP escort and guard duties nationwide. This decisive move comes amid escalating violence in Plateau, Benue, the Southeast, and other regions, where security forces have struggled to contain persistent attacks.

During a crucial meeting with PMF Squadron Commanders in Abuja, Egbetokun revealed that a “gradual but firm” withdrawal process has commenced to redeploy these specialized officers to their core mandate of riot control and emergency response. “Our tactical units have become overstretched protecting private individuals while communities burn,” the IGP stated, acknowledging how the diversion of these forces has compromised national security.

The reform package includes:

  • Immediate stand-down of MOPOL from non-essential assignments
  • Maintenance of at least one combat-ready unit per squadron
  • Quarterly retraining programs on ethics and professional conduct
  • Vicarious liability for commanders overseeing misconduct
  • Deployment of new Special Intervention Squad to crisis zones

This shakeup follows recent deadly attacks in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, and Otukpo where delayed police responses were blamed on manpower shortages. Security analysts have long criticized the abuse of MOPOL personnel, with over 30% reportedly attached to politicians and businessmen rather than frontline duties.

“The PMF must return to being Nigeria’s shield against anarchy, not a status symbol for the privileged,” Egbetokun declared, warning that indiscipline would now attract severe sanctions. The move has drawn mixed reactions, with some state governors expressing concerns about reduced protection, while civil society groups hail it as overdue.

As the phased recall begins, all 79 PMF squadrons have been directed to submit redeployment plans within 72 hours. The police hierarchy anticipates these measures will free up nearly 15,000 officers for critical security operations within the next month.
