Gunmen Attack NYSC Lodge In Akwa Ibom

Gunmen suspected to be robbers on Wednesday attacked and robbed Corps members of their valuables at Udo Ekong Ekwere Street, off Information Drive, Uyo.

According to witnesses, at least 21 Corps Members were robbed in the incident.

The Management of the NYSC in the state confirmed the incident but stated that contrary to reports in certain quarters, nobody was raped.

In a statement on Thursday by Mrs. Chinyere Ekwe, the NYSC State Coordinator, she said she and the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Olatoye Durosinmi, visited the Corps members for an assessment.

“While there, it was confirmed that 21 Corp members occupy the said property. The interaction with the Corps members further revealed that an attack on them was actually carried out by thieves at about 1 am this morning.

“In the process, the invaders took their valuables including phones, laptops, and some cash. They confirmed that NO bodily harm was meted on them, and NO CORPS MEMBER WAS RAPED,” Mrs. Ekwe said.

She further urged social media operators and online media establishments to be careful when reporting events like this as it could have a dangerous psychological effect on parents and guardians of Corps members 

Mrs. Ekwe also explained that the State Commissioner of Police has promised the Corps members and the public that an investigation on the matter has begun and that the perpetrators will be apprehended as soon as possible.
