FIRS Rolls Out New SOP to Standardise Tax Services Nationwide

Date:

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has unveiled a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) aimed at eliminating inconsistencies and confusion in tax administration across its over 300 offices nationwide.

The SOP is designed to streamline and unify key tax processes—including registration, payment, audit, and enforcement—ensuring that all FIRS offices follow a single, coherent system. According to the agency, the reform will make tax services clearer, more transparent, and easier for Nigerians to navigate.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Mr. Collins Omokaro, Special Adviser on Communications and Advocacy to the FIRS Executive Chairman, described the SOP as a strategic move to enhance the taxpayer experience and build public trust in the system.

“This is about people, experience, and impact. It’s a step toward a tax system that supports voluntary compliance and national development,” Omokaro said.

FIRS Executive Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji emphasised that the SOP is more than a technical guideline—it represents a transformation in how the agency delivers public service.

“This SOP is not just a technical document; it is a declaration of who we are becoming as a service. It reflects our commitment to transparency and service to the Nigerian people,” Adedeji stated.

The new SOP also aligns with the agency’s broader digital transformation agenda, integrating technology and human systems to deliver faster, more reliable services. It includes enhanced training and support for staff to ensure efficient internal operations and consistent taxpayer interactions.

“With this rollout, every FIRS staff member has a clear mandate: study it, apply it, and embody it. That’s how we’ll earn the trust of Nigerians,” Omokaro added.

The SOP initiative is part of FIRS’s commitment to becoming a more service-oriented institution—focused on clarity, consistency, and contributing to national economic development through improved voluntary tax compliance.
