World football governing body, FIFA, has officially commenced an investigation into allegations of racist chants by Argentina players following their victory in the Copa America.
The probe comes in response to a video circulating on social media, showing members of the Argentine squad engaged in what appears to be discriminatory chanting.
The incident took place during a live video posted by Enzo Fernandez, a midfielder for Chelsea and Argentina, from the team bus after their Copa America triumph over Colombia.
In the video, the players are heard singing what is interpreted as derogatory remarks aimed at French players of African descent.
In response to the controversy, a FIFA spokesperson said on Wednesday that the football body strongly condemns all forms of discrimination, emphasizing its commitment to combating such behaviour among players, fans, and officials alike.
Chelsea Football Club also announced on Wednesday that they have initiated an internal disciplinary procedure against Enzo Fernandez concerning the incident.
Fernandez, who holds the record for the most expensive transfer in Premier League history, has since issued an apology for his involvement.
