The Federal Government has announced plans to distribute five million Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to Nigerian households by the year 2030, as part of efforts to expand access to clean and sustainable energy across the country.
Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, made this known during the flag-off of the North West Zone phase of the grassroots LPG Penetration Programme in Sokoto.
The initiative, which has already been launched in the South West, South South, North East, and the Federal Capital Territory, aims to convert one million households annually to cleaner cooking alternatives.
“With support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our goal is to distribute five million LPG cylinders by 2030, converting one million households each year to cleaner, safer, and more sustainable cooking methods,” the minister stated.
Ekpo emphasised that the programme is not only about energy but also about public health, environmental protection, and economic empowerment. He noted that the shift to LPG would help reduce indoor air pollution, combat deforestation, and create employment opportunities for women and youths within the LPG value chain.
The initiative is also expected to support local manufacturing and distribution of LPG equipment and appliances.
The minister expressed gratitude to Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto for his support and also acknowledged the Sultan of Sokoto for his commitment to community welfare. He praised the Decade of Gas Secretariat for its strategic leadership and lauded the BUA Group, the main sponsor of the programme, for playing a key role in enhancing LPG access in underserved communities.
