The Federal Government has approved a new monthly allowance of ₦77,000 for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, effective July 2024.
This increase aligns with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. A statement by NYSC spokesperson, Caroline Embu, on Wednesday, confirmed the development.
The approval came through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta, on September 25, 2024.
NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had previously advocated for improved welfare for Corps Members during a visit to the commission.
He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the increase, noting that it will provide relief and boost the morale of Corps Members in their service to the nation.
This marks a significant rise from the previous monthly allowance of ₦33,000, implemented in 2020 following the Minimum Wage Act, raising wages from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000.
The recent increment follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the new minimum wage bill, which increased the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.
