Nigeria’s club coefficient in Africa faces a significant challenge as the country will be represented by only one team in the group stage of this season’s CAF inter-club competitions.
Enyimba Football Club of Aba, a nine-time Nigerian champion, secured its place in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after a dramatic three-two victory in a penalty shootout against Burkina Faso’s Etoile de Filante in Uyo on Sunday.
In contrast, reigning Nigeria Premier Football League champions Enugu Rangers could not advance in the CAF Champions League, losing three-two on aggregate to Angolan side Sagrada Esperança.
For Nigeria to field four clubs in next season’s competitions, Enyimba must reach at least the quarterfinals of the Confederation Cup.
