Democracy Day: Ododo Urges Nigerians to Embrace Unity, Civic Engagement for National Development

Date:

LOKOJA — Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State has called on Nigerians to rekindle the democratic spirit of unity, civic responsibility, and active participation in national development as the country commemorates the 2025 Democracy Day.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Lokoja, Ododo described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that democracy is a hard-earned legacy built on the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes.

He paid tribute to the champions of the 1993 presidential election—widely considered Nigeria’s freest and fairest—emphasising that the efforts of those who fought for democratic freedoms, including President Bola Tinubu, must never be forgotten.

“We are not only beneficiaries of the democracy earned through the blood and sweat of our heroes; we are stewards of its promises,” Ododo said.

The governor underscored that democracy flourishes when it is participatory and rooted in accountability. He reaffirmed his administration’s focus on strengthening institutions, promoting transparency, and empowering citizens—especially youth—to play meaningful roles in governance.

“To our youth, you are not just the leaders of tomorrow; you are the true guardians of our democracy today,” he charged.

Ododo further pledged to maintain a people-centered government committed to progress in infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and security. He urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, and public servants to lead by example, stressing that the success of democracy lies in tangible results, not titles or speeches.

“Democracy is strengthened not by titles, but by service… not by rhetoric, but by results,” he added.

The governor also warned against forces that threaten national unity and called on citizens to defend democratic values against division and destabilization.

He pledged to align with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, promising to uphold the rights and freedoms of all Kogi residents and ensure they live and work in dignity.

“Let us rise together in the spirit of nationhood. Let us stand together in the pursuit of progress. Let us walk together on the path of peace, equity, and sustainable development,” Ododo stated.
