The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a fresh bail application filed by detained alleged terrorists’ negotiator, Tukur Mohammed Mamu.
Justice Mohammed Umar, who delivered the ruling on Wednesday, acknowledged Mamu’s health concerns but directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure he receives proper medical care at an appropriate health facility instead of granting bail.
“The detaining authority should not release him but take him to an appropriate health facility where he would be adequately attended to,” the judge ruled.
Justice Umar noted that the prosecution had shown diligence in handling the case, which is one of the factors the court considers when deciding whether to grant bail.
He stated that since the prosecution had been consistent and committed in its case, Mamu’s request for bail could not be justified.
The judge further ordered that the defence counsel should select a suitable health facility for the defendant, to which the DSS must promptly convey him for treatment.
Additionally, the court directed the DSS to allow Mamu access to members of his family while in custody.
