The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months over what it described as a breach of Senate rules and disruption of proceedings.
The suspension was announced on Thursday, March 6, 2024, following the submission of a report by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. The committee found that the Kogi Central lawmaker had refused to return to her seat during a session, leading to disruptions in the chamber.
As part of the disciplinary action, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan will forfeit her salary and security details for the six-month period. Additionally, she has been barred from accessing the National Assembly premises throughout the suspension.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions within political circles, with some supporting the Senate’s stance on upholding order, while others question the severity of the punishment.
