Bakers in Kogi said they would call off their strike at midnight on Sunday and go back to work on Monday, July 25 with a 25% hike placed on the prices of bread.
This announcement was made by Gabriel Bamidele-Adeniyi, Chairman, Association of Masters Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, Kogi Chapter, on Sunday in Lokoja.
The chapter had on Wednesday joined the nationwide strike declared by the national body to establish its demands from the Federal Government concerning the prices of ingredients used for Bread production.
“By God’s grace by tomorrow, Monday July 25, we shall resume production of bread again after ending our strike midnight of Sunday, July 24,” he said.
The chairman also disclosed that the Government is yet to respond to their pleas and demands.
“Unfortunately, as we resume production, July 25, prices of bread will definitely increase by 20 percent.”
The chairman noted that the increment is due to the hike in prices of the materials used in the production of bread.
“We want the government to see to it that the prices of yeast, sugar, and flour being imported are drastically reduced, more so that only three companies have the licence to import them.
“Unfortunately, those firms are monopolising the prices of sugar, yeast, and flour to the detriment of bakers in Nigeria.”
Mr. Bamidele-Adeniyi urged the government to ensure that the Bshuta sugar company starts production and also open the way for members to obtain the licence to import and obtain loans for better bread production.
