UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will resign today after a wave of resignations from his government. Boris will announce his exit from Downing Street later.
Reports suggest the PM had spoken to the chairman of the Conservative backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, and agreed to resign, with a new Tory leader to be appointed by the party’s conference in October.
The prime minister is also expected to make a statement to the country today.
This decision comes shortly after Boris Johnson’s newly appointed Education Secretary Michelle Donelan stepped down just 36 hours in the post, and Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi urged the Minister to resign.
There have been over 50 resignations from all levels of government, and backbenchers calling for Boris Johnson’s resignation. The rebellion began on Tuesday after Downing Street admitted the prime minister was aware of the allegations of inappropriate behaviour levelled against former Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher in 2019, but still handed him an appointment in February.
Just minutes after the prime minister apologised, admitting that appointing Mr Pincher was a “mistake”, Heath Secretary Sajid Javid announced his exit, and Chancellor Rishi Sunak quickly followed suit.
Their departure kick-started a series of resignations, from cabinet ministers to trade envoys.
