Death Toll Rises To 30 In Niger Boat Mishap, 58 Rescued — NEMA

0

At least 30 people have been confirmed dead and 58 others rescued following a boat accident along the Malale–Kainji Lake route in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday in Gausawa community, with eyewitnesses reporting that about 90 passengers were onboard the vessel. According to NEMA, investigations revealed that the mishap was caused by overloading, compounded by a collision with a tree stump along the water channel.

“So far, 58 passengers have been rescued, while over 30 lives have been lost as one additional body was recovered this afternoon. Several other passengers remain unaccounted for, with search and rescue efforts still ongoing,” NEMA stated.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) is leading rescue operations in collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), local divers, and community volunteers.

NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, has directed intensified efforts to locate the missing passengers.

Meanwhile, NIWA has expressed concern over recurring fatalities on Nigeria’s waterways, blaming poor adherence to safety regulations.

“We are tired of hearing all these fatalities coming through boat accidents. We’ve done enlightenment and sensitisation of boat operators, and even distributed life jackets, but people don’t adhere to the safety measures,” said NIWA’s General Manager, Olawale Adetola.

Tuesday’s tragedy is the latest in a string of boat accidents across the country. In August, more than 40 people were reported missing after a boat mishap in Sokoto. Last year, at least 16 farmers died in a similar incident when a canoe capsized in the same state.

Experts warn that poor regulation, unsafe practices, and lack of compliance with safety guidelines remain key causes of the repeated accidents on Nigeria’s waterways.

Germany Stunned By Slovakia In World Cup Qualifier As Spain Ease Past Bulgaria

0

Germany suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Slovakia in their opening 2026 World Cup qualifier on Thursday, while Spain began their campaign with a dominant 3-0 victory away to Bulgaria.

Atletico Madrid defender David Hancko broke the deadlock just before halftime in Bratislava, finishing unmarked inside the box. Middlesbrough’s new signing David Strelec doubled Slovakia’s lead with a stunning strike into the top corner 10 minutes after the restart.

The result gave Slovakia a dream start in Group A as they chase a first World Cup appearance since 2010. Germany, however, find themselves under pressure after another setback, having already lost to Portugal and France in the UEFA Nations League Final Four earlier this year. Julian Nagelsmann’s men next face Northern Ireland in Hamburg on Tuesday, with Luxembourg also in their group.

Elsewhere in Group A, Northern Ireland defeated Luxembourg 3-1. Goals from Jamie Reid, Shea Charles, and Justin Devenny sealed the win after Seid Korac’s red card left the hosts vulnerable.

In Group E, Spain showed their quality in Sofia against Bulgaria. Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring inside five minutes, Marc Cucurella added a superb second on 30 minutes, and Lamine Yamal provided an assist for Mikel Merino to make it 3-0 before halftime. Spain now prepare to face Turkey, who edged Georgia 3-2 in Tbilisi despite finishing with 10 men.

Other results saw the Netherlands held to a 1-1 draw by Poland in Rotterdam, with Matty Cash’s late strike cancelling out Denzel Dumfries’ opener. Lithuania equalised deep into stoppage time to draw 1-1 with Malta in the same group.

In Group J, Belgium thrashed Liechtenstein 6-0 in Vaduz, with goals from Maxim De Cuyper, Youri Tielemans (twice), Arthur Theate, Kevin De Bruyne, and Malick Fofana. Wales stayed top of the group with a 1-0 win in Kazakhstan courtesy of Kieffer Moore, though Belgium have two games in hand.

President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦1.85 billion to fund the education and rehabilitation of rescued Chibok girls until 2027, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their welfare.

The Ministry of Education disclosed on Thursday that ₦1,854,277,768 has been committed to cover tuition fees, accommodation, vocational training, psychosocial care, medical support, and parental assistance.

“Mr President has continued to approve the payment of tuition, accommodation, and associated fees to AUN to safeguard the education of these young women,” the Ministry stated, noting that 68 of the girls are enrolled at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the programme is not just financial but a moral responsibility. “This commitment represents Nigeria’s pledge to turn a dark chapter in our nation’s history into a story of resilience, dignity, and hope,” he said.

The intervention also provides vocational starter packs, child and parental support, surgical care, travel logistics, and National Health Insurance enrolment, with monitoring of academic progress set to continue for the next three years.

More than 10 years after Boko Haram abducted 276 students from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, 108 rescued girls remain under government care, while 82 are still missing.

The 2014 abduction sparked the global #BringBackOurGirls campaign, with figures like Michelle Obama and Malala Yousafzai joining calls for their release. Most recently, Lydia Simon was freed in 2024 after 10 years in captivity.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck was already ahead on the road when the tricycle attempted to overtake it.

In the incident, the tricycle allegedly veered too close to the truck and was crushed beneath it, resulting in the deaths of three occupants, including the driver.

One passenger, however, survived the crash and was quickly rescued from the wreckage.

A British man accused of driving his vehicle into crowds during Liverpool’s Premier League title parade last May has pleaded not guilty to 31 offences.

Paul Doyle, 53, a former British marine, appeared by videolink from prison at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday, where he denied charges relating to 29 victims aged between six months and 77 years.

On May 26, thousands of Liverpool supporters filled the streets to celebrate the club’s record-equalling 20th English top-flight title, when celebrations were cut short by the shocking incident.

Merseyside Police reported that 134 people were injured after Doyle allegedly drove his car into the crowds.

He faces charges of dangerous driving, attempting to cause or causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and affray.

Doyle, a father of three from the Croxteth area of Liverpool, will stand trial beginning November 24, with proceedings expected to last three to four weeks.

Portugal Declares Day Of Mourning After 15 Dead, 18 Injured In Lisbon Funicular Crash

0

Portugal has declared a national day of mourning after the historic Glória funicular derailed in central Lisbon, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18 others.

The crash occurred around 18:15 local time (17:15 GMT) on Wednesday when the 140-year-old funicular, a popular tourist attraction, lost control on its steep route near Liberty Avenue and slammed into a building. Authorities confirmed that foreign nationals were among the victims, with five of the injured in critical condition.

Lisbon’s mayor, Carlos Moedas, described it as “a tragic day for our city.”

Footage from the scene showed the iconic yellow carriage overturned in a cobblestone street as smoke rose and panicked passengers fled. Emergency crews worked to free survivors trapped in the wreckage.

Though the cause has not been officially determined, eyewitnesses reported a brake failure. “The funicular hit a building with brutal force and collapsed like a cardboard box; it had no brakes,” one witness told local broadcaster SIC.

Another witness, Teresa d’Avó, said: “We all started running away because we thought the carriage was going to hit the one below. But it fell around the bend and crashed into a building.”

The newspaper Observador reported that a loose cable may have triggered the derailment. Lisbon prosecutors, police, and the national transport accident investigation department have launched an inquiry.

Carris, the city’s public transport operator, said all safety protocols had been followed. “Interim maintenance was carried out last year and regular monthly and weekly checks had been done. We are very sorry about what happened,” it stated.

European and international leaders expressed condolences. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent sympathies to victims’ families, while Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was “appalled by the terrible accident.” Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also extended condolences.

The Glória funicular, inaugurated in 1885 and electrified in the early 20th century, is one of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks, carrying passengers on a steep 275-metre route from Restauradores Square to Bairro Alto in just three minutes.

Tinubu Embarks On 10-Day Working Vacation To France And UK

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Abuja for a 10-day working vacation in Europe, combining official duties with his annual leave.

In a statement issued Thursday, Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the President will spend the period in France and the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria.

The trip, described as part of the President’s annual schedule, will allow him to rest while also attending to official matters abroad.

This marks President Tinubu’s first annual leave in 2025. The presidency assured that governance and state functions will continue seamlessly during his absence.

FAAN Investigates Passenger Forced Off Enugu Air Flight For Refusing To Switch Off Phone

0

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched an investigation into the removal of a passenger from an Enugu Air flight after he allegedly refused to switch off his mobile phone before take-off.

A video circulating on social media showed security personnel escorting the passenger off the aircraft, which was scheduled to fly from Enugu to Lagos.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, said preliminary findings indicated that the passenger ignored repeated instructions from both crew and fellow passengers to turn off his phone.

“So far, what we have gathered is that a passenger was meant to switch off his mobile phone but he refused to abide by that instruction,” Orah explained. “Other passengers also asked him to turn off his phone, and when he refused, security personnel on ground were alerted.”

Orah added that the passenger’s behaviour unsettled others on board, prompting the pilot to return the aircraft so security operatives could deplane him. “He became unruly and the pilot had to report the matter to the controller,” she said.

The incident comes just weeks after the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) reinforced its directive that all mobile devices must be completely switched off during take-off and landing, following another case of air rage involving a passenger on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos.

U.N. Halts Humanitarian Air Service In Nigeria Amid Severe Funding Shortage

0

The United Nations has suspended its humanitarian air service in northeastern Nigeria due to a critical lack of funding, raising fears of deeper isolation for conflict-affected communities already struggling with hunger, displacement, and violence.

The U.N. Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS), operated by the World Food Programme (WFP), shut down its fixed-wing operations last week after nearly a decade of transporting aid workers, medical supplies, and relief cargo into insecure areas of Borno and Yobe states.

“In 2024, UNHAS fixed-wing flights carried more than 9,000 passengers. Already this year, 4,500 humanitarian staff have relied on the service to reach affected areas,” U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told reporters in New York. “UNHAS cannot continue without funding: $5.4 million is needed to remain operational for the next six months. Without this funding, the humanitarian response in northeast Nigeria risks being cut off from the very people it is meant to serve.”

For nine years, the service has provided a lifeline in a region plagued by insurgency, where road travel remains extremely dangerous due to ambushes and attacks.

The suspension comes as the WFP faces unprecedented financial shortfalls. In July, the agency warned it might suspend emergency food and nutrition aid for 1.3 million people in the northeast.

Margot van der Velden, WFP’s regional director for West and Central Africa, stressed that the agency urgently requires $5.4 million just to sustain operations for six months.

Although the Nigerian government has stepped up support and is now the largest financier of the emergency response, the U.N. emphasised that international contributions remain indispensable.

“The humanitarian response in northeast Nigeria risks being cut off from the very people it is meant to serve,” Dujarric warned. “Without air links, humanitarian workers lose safe access to remote conflict-affected communities, where millions are already grappling with hunger, displacement, and violence.”

The U.N. cautioned that the consequences could be devastating, with families facing worsening hunger, unsafe migration, or exploitation by extremist groups.

The crisis in Nigeria reflects a broader trend as humanitarian agencies worldwide confront shrinking donor budgets, strained by global economic pressures and simultaneous crises in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine.

“For Nigeria’s northeast, where insurgency and instability have already displaced millions, the loss of a vital air bridge may further isolate vulnerable populations at a time when they can least afford it,” the U.N. statement added.

Tinubu: Nigeria Gaining Global Respect Through Bold Economic Reforms

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria is regaining global respect due to his administration’s bold economic reforms, which he said have stabilised the economy and restored investor confidence.

Tinubu made the remarks at the State House on Wednesday while receiving His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Oladunni Olaoye, Orumogege III, the Soun of Ogbomosoland, alongside other royal fathers.

According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President said the country had endured years of neglect, fake records, smuggling, and widespread corruption that drained revenues and undermined integrity.

“Years of neglect and self-deception, fake records, smuggling, and all of that denied Nigeria the necessary revenue for progress and development,” Tinubu said.
“Then we were confronted again with arbitrage trading of currency, an illusion of selling papers, corruption all over the place, and the integrity of the country and its economy being extremely and adversely challenged.

“We had to take those actions. With your prayers, patience, perseverance, and great understanding, I’m glad to tell you today that the economy is stabilised. The bleeding has stopped. Haemorrhage is gone; the patient is alive.”

Highlighting his administration’s initiatives, Tinubu listed the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a major achievement, stressing that no Nigerian student should be denied education due to poverty.

“Everybody has a right to education as it is the greatest weapon you can give to human beings against poverty; that’s what we are doing,” he said. “We have remained aggressive on our infrastructure. And it’s just two years.”

The President expressed gratitude to the Soun of Ogbomosoland for recognising the bold policy choices taken since his assumption of office. He also commended the monarch for driving modernisation in Ogbomosoland and pledging to strengthen traditional institutions.
