Hosting Commonwealth Games Is A Dream That Must Be Realised – Tinubu

0

President Bola Tinubu has described Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games as a “dream” that must become reality, saying the move would mark a historic first for Africa.

In a post on his official X account on Wednesday, Tinubu noted that no African nation has ever hosted the Games. He said bringing the 2030 edition to Nigeria would send a powerful message that Africa is vital to the future of the Commonwealth.

Nigeria is scheduled to present its final bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games before the event’s evaluation committee on Wednesday. The Nigerian delegation is led by Shehu Dikko, President of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), alongside the Commission’s Director-General, Bukola Olopade.

In support of Nigeria’s bid, Tinubu declared, “It’s time for Africa,” and urged the Commonwealth to “complete the circle of unity.”

The Commonwealth Games, held every four years, primarily features countries that are former territories of the United Kingdom. In April, the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) announced that it had met the March 28, 2025 deadline for expression of interest to bid for the 2030 Games.

Nigeria previously lost a bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow. The NOC said Nigeria’s 2030 bid in the capital city Abuja would present a unique opportunity to showcase its development, enhance its global standing, and invigorate its sports culture.

Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event, the African Games, in 2003 in Abuja. The next Commonwealth Games will again be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to March 29, 2026, after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out due to spiralling costs.

Malawi President Chakwera Concedes Election Defeat

0

Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has conceded defeat in last week’s election, acknowledging that his rival and predecessor Peter Mutharika had gained an “insurmountable lead.”

“A few minutes ago, I called Professor Mutharika to wish him well,” Chakwera said in a national address on Wednesday, hours before the electoral commission was due to announce the final results of the September 16 vote.

Chakwera, 70, of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), had taken power in 2020 after defeating Mutharika, a constitutional law expert from the Democratic Progressive Party.

The country’s struggling economy dominated the election, with critics accusing Chakwera of mismanagement, indecisiveness, and failing to tackle corruption or deliver on job creation promises. Inflation soared to 33 percent during his tenure, while the price of maize and fertiliser — staples in the agriculture-dependent nation — sharply increased.

“In the days that remain, I want you to know that I am committed to a peaceful transfer of power,” Chakwera said. “I know that many of you who supported my campaign for reelection will be disappointed.”

Chad Signs Peace Deal With ‘Last’ Gold Region Militia

0

Chad’s government has signed a peace deal with an armed group in the country’s north, ending years of conflict over gold deposits in the Miski area of Tibesti province, a mediator confirmed on Tuesday.

Ibrahim Edji Mahamat, who facilitated the talks, said the agreement marked “the definitive return of peace in Miski and the entire province of Tibesti.” He described the group as the “last dissident group” still active in the region.

The deal, signed by government mediator Saleh Kebzabo, offers amnesty to both Chadian defence and security forces and the rebels who took part in clashes between 2019 and 2020, according to a document seen by AFP.

Members of the Diffa Al Watan Popular Committee of Miski will be integrated into the army or the police after receiving training.

Several rebel groups had previously prevented state officials from entering Miski — about 200 kilometres from Bardai, the main city in Tibesti province — to access the area’s gold resources.

Mahamat noted that other rebel factions had already accepted similar deals in 2019, 2023, and in recent months.

Since Chad gained independence from France in 1960, the Tibesti region has drawn numerous illegal gold miners, making it a flashpoint for armed conflict.

Ryan Routh Convicted In Trump Assassination Plot, Tries To Stab Himself In Court

0

A federal jury on Tuesday convicted Ryan Routh of attempting to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump during a 2024 golf outing in Florida, before chaos erupted in court as Routh tried to stab himself with a pen.

After just two hours of deliberation, the jury of seven women and five men found Routh guilty on all counts, including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer. As the verdict was read, Routh grabbed a flexible pen designed for inmates and thrust it toward his neck. Officers wrestled him down and dragged him from the courtroom while his daughter screamed, “Dad, I love you, don’t do anything. I’ll get you out. He didn’t hurt anybody.”

Routh, 59, will be sentenced on December 18 and faces life in prison.

Trump, reacting to the verdict, said, “It’s very important. You can’t let things like that happen. Nothing to do with me, but a president or even a person, you can’t allow that to happen. Justice was served.”

Prosecutors said Routh spent weeks plotting to kill Trump before aiming a rifle through shrubbery as the then-Republican candidate approached the sixth green of his West Palm Beach country club on September 15, 2024.

Secret Service agent Robert Fercano testified he spotted Routh and opened fire before Trump came into view, forcing Routh to drop his weapon and flee. He was later arrested along an interstate after a witness identified him.

The attempt came just nine weeks after Trump narrowly survived another assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear.

Representing himself at trial, Routh argued no crime occurred because he never pulled the trigger. “It’s hard for me to believe that a crime occurred if the trigger was never pulled,” he told jurors. Prosecutors countered that his intent and preparation made the case clear.

Attorney General Pam Bondi called the guilty verdict “a powerful message that political violence will be punished without compromise.”

Routh, a North Carolina construction worker who later moved to Hawaii, has a history of erratic and dangerous behavior, including stockpiling weapons, staging mercenary recruitment schemes, and past arrests for weapons and theft. He still faces state terrorism and attempted murder charges.

Trump Shifts Stance, Says Ukraine Can Reclaim All Land Lost To Russia With NATO And EU Backing

0

President Donald Trump on Tuesday declared that Ukraine could win back all its territory from Russia, marking a dramatic departure from his earlier calls for Kyiv to concede land to end the war.

“I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Trump wrote on social media shortly after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original borders from where this war started, is very much an option,” he added.

The comments, if sustained, are a major boost for Zelenskyy, who has urged Washington to maintain pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Only weeks ago, Trump had argued Ukraine would never be able to reclaim all land seized by Moscow since its 2014 annexation of Crimea — a stance that unsettled European leaders and Kyiv alike.

After their meeting, Zelenskyy hailed Trump’s turnaround: “Trump is a game changer by himself.”

In his address to the General Assembly, Trump ridiculed Russia’s faltering campaign: “Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a war that should have taken a real military power less than a week to win. This is not distinguishing Russia. In fact, it is very much making them look like ‘a paper tiger.’”

He added that what was supposed to be “a quick little skirmish” has instead become a humiliating drain on Moscow. “It shows you what leadership is, what bad leadership can do to a country. The only question now is how many lives will be needlessly lost on both sides.”

Trump, who had previously floated “land swaps” as part of a peace deal with Putin, now says sanctions and tariffs may be the only way to end the conflict if Moscow refuses to negotiate. “In the event that Russia is not ready to make a deal to end the war, then the United States is fully prepared to impose a very strong round of powerful tariffs, which would stop the bloodshed, I believe, very quickly,” he told world leaders.

The reversal comes amid growing European alarm over Russian provocations, including the violation of Estonian airspace by three Russian fighter jets last week. Trump said he would support NATO allies who chose to shoot down intruding Russian aircraft, while stressing U.S. involvement would depend on the circumstances.

Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s calls for Europe to tighten the screws on Moscow by halting oil and gas imports. “We have great respect for the fight that Ukraine is putting up,” Trump told him, while Zelenskyy replied he had “good news” from the battlefield.

The UN Human Rights Office reported Tuesday that civilian casualties in Ukraine rose by 40% in the first eight months of 2025 compared with 2024, accusing Russian authorities of systematic torture and ill-treatment of Ukrainian detainees in occupied territories.

French President Emmanuel Macron praised Trump’s shift, saying, “I welcome the fact that the president of the United States believes in Ukraine’s ability not only to hold the course but to prevail.”

Trinidad Court Halts Extradition Of Former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner To US

0

Former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner has won a decade-long legal battle to avoid extradition to the United States, where he faces corruption charges linked to one of football’s biggest scandals.

Trinidad and Tobago’s High Court on Tuesday permanently stayed extradition proceedings against Warner, 82, ruling that the process was flawed in the absence of an official extradition agreement between the two countries.

Warner was among 14 individuals indicted by US prosecutors in May 2015 on a 47-count charge that included racketeering and bribery. Since then, he had fought extradition at every legal level, including the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London, which dismissed his appeal in November 2022, effectively clearing the way for extradition.

However, at a hearing on September 12, Warner’s defence argued that no formal treaty existed between Trinidad and Tobago and the US, a requirement for extradition. An attorney representing the state, who had recently assumed the case, did not oppose the submission.

Justice Karen Reid subsequently ruled that the proceedings could not stand.

Following the judgment, Warner told The Associated Press he felt vindicated. “I could never get back the lost reputation, which has happened to me. My life can now begin afresh, but it’s 10 years too late,” he said.

Warner, who was forced out of FIFA in 2011 over a bribery scandal, has consistently denied wrongdoing despite numerous allegations. A 2020 US Department of Justice indictment accused him of receiving $5 million in bribes to support Russia’s successful bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Beyond football, Warner also served as a government minister and member of parliament in Trinidad and Tobago.

All We Ask For Is Partnership With Dangote — DAPPMAN

0

The Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) has urged the Dangote Refinery to adopt an open-door supply policy and provide marketers with fair access to petroleum products at reasonable prices.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, DAPPMAN spokesperson Ikem Ohia said partnership with the Refinery would guarantee steady fuel availability across the country.

He stressed that the Association was not in conflict with Dangote Refinery but wanted collaboration to eliminate fuel queues and ensure Nigerians benefit from a stable supply.

“Our key interest is to have petroleum products offered at reasonable prices consistently, in a way that there’s no stock-out and Nigerians no longer queue for fuel,” Ohia stated.

He explained that while Dangote Refinery is currently the dominant supplier, the core challenge was access and pricing. “The question is: at what price does he offer us, and do we actually have access to purchase these products from him?” he asked.

DAPPMAN members, Ohia added, have built a robust distribution network for more than 20 years, with depots strategically located in Calabar, Port Harcourt, Warri, and Lagos. “What we are asking Dangote to do is to use these depots that are already in existence for us to meet the demands of Nigerians,” he said.

Dismissing suggestions that marketers asked for subsidies, the spokesperson stressed the matter was purely commercial. “We are businessmen; he is a businessman. We’re not asking for subsidies. We went into negotiations and are still negotiating to see how he can bridge the gap,” Ohia said.

He further explained that most global refineries supply through two models — wholesale bulk lifting by vessels and ex-gantry retail sales. “Ideally, refineries emphasise bulk evacuation through off-takers who can lift massive quantities and allow continuous production. Relying only on retail gantry sales cannot meet national demand,” he warned.

According to Ohia, DAPPMAN had reached out to Dangote Refinery before production started, seeking collaboration to take products in bulk, but understanding has yet to be firmly reached. “Instead, he prefers to work with a few selected partners, which includes one or two of our members. We believe an open system, not a controlled one, will help the country,” he said.

Ohia added that many DAPPMAN members also operate retail networks of up to 300 stations that could distribute products nationwide but currently face restricted supply. “Figures don’t lie; whatever is supplied now doesn’t meet full market needs. Bulk deliveries to depots are necessary if we must serve Nigerians effectively,” he said.

The clarification by the Association followed controversies surrounding petroleum product distribution nationwide.

The Dangote Refinery had invested billions into the purchase of 4,000 CNG-powered trucks for nationwide fuel supply; however, marketers have argued that the Refinery was tending towards monopolising the downstream sector.

The rift soon drew the intervention of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, who on Tuesday advised the oil marketers to consider restructuring and even buying the Port Harcourt Refinery to stay relevant in the evolving downstream sector instead of “resisting progress.”

Meanwhile, President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gilly-Harris, also appeared on The Morning Brief on Tuesday, stating that Dangote Refinery’s 4,000 trucks were not enough to ensure a stable and efficient product supply to the nooks and crannies of the country.

Three Soldiers Get Life Sentences For Selling Arms To Terrorists

0

A Special Court-Martial of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Borno State, has sentenced three soldiers to life imprisonment and a fourth to 15 years for illegally selling arms in collaboration with police officers and terrorist groups.

The trial, held at the Officers’ Mess of the Theatre Command Headquarters, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), was presided over by Brigadier General Ugochukwu Unachukwu, Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division.

Delivering judgment, Brigadier General Mohammed Abdullahi, President of the Court-Martial, found Sergeant Raphael Ameh, Sergeant Ejiga Musa, and Lance Corporal Patrick Ocheje guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment, while Corporal Omitoye Rufus received 15 years in prison.

The soldiers were convicted of multiple offences, including theft, unlawful dealing in ammunition, and aiding the enemy under the Armed Forces Act.

Sergeant Ameh, an armourer at the 7 Division Garrison, conspired with a deceased colleague to steal ammunition from the division’s armoury and allegedly collaborated with police officers to conceal weapons in bags of beans, smuggling them to Enugu and Ebonyi States. Bank records linked him to over 100 suspicious transactions between July 2022 and June 2024.

Sergeant Musa, armourer of the 195 Battalion, conspired with Lance Corporal Ocheje and several police officers to sell an AK-47 rifle and large quantities of ammunition, receiving over ₦500,000 before his arrest while attempting to sell additional rounds.

Corporal Rufus was convicted of selling 40 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition to a police officer. Lance Corporal Ocheje, deployed at the forward operating base in Molai, diverted ammunition during communal clashes and stole an AK-47 rifle from a fellow soldier.

The court ruled their actions posed a direct threat to military operations and national security, constituting a clear case of aiding the enemy.

Condemning the convicts, Brigadier General Abdullahi described them as “bad eggs” who betrayed the trust, discipline, and honour expected of soldiers, reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s zero-tolerance policy on the sale of arms and ammunition to adversaries.

West Africans Transferred From US To Ghana Deported Again

0

Eleven West Africans who were transferred from the United States to Ghana under an agreement with the Trump administration have been deported a second time, sparking fears that some could face torture or persecution in their home countries.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, lawyer for the group, told Reuters on Tuesday that at least six of the deportees are now in neighbouring Togo, while the whereabouts of the remaining five remain unknown. The group includes four Nigerians, three Togolese, two Malians, one Liberian, and one Gambian.

Ghana’s government has not responded to requests for comment. Earlier this month, President John Dramani Mahama said his administration had agreed to temporarily take in nationals from other West African countries being deported from the US under former President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Last week, Barker-Vormawor filed a lawsuit in Accra on behalf of 11 of the first group of 14 deportees, seeking a court order to prevent them from being sent back to their home countries. He argued that at least eight of the individuals had been granted protection by US immigration judges due to risks of torture, persecution, or inhumane treatment.

At Tuesday’s court hearing, Barker-Vormawor said the group had already been deported over the weekend, rendering the lawsuit “moot” and prompting its withdrawal. He also mentioned reports of another 14 deportees arriving in Ghana, though he had not independently verified the information.

The Ghanaian government has maintained that its decision to accept West African deportees does not constitute an endorsement of Trump’s immigration policy, and that Ghana received no compensation for taking them in.

Labour Unions Reject FG’s Alleged Plan To Sell Stakes In Oil Joint Ventures

0

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have opposed an alleged plan by the Federal Government to sell off some of its stakes in Joint Ventures (JVs) with international oil companies operating in Nigeria.

The controversy follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a reassessment of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s (NNPCL) 30 per cent management fee and 30 per cent frontier exploration deduction under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). Tinubu charged the Economic Management Team to optimise government savings, enhance fiscal discipline, and streamline deductions from the Federation Account.

Speaking at a joint news conference in Abuja on Tuesday, PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo and NUPENG President Williams Akporeha warned that selling government stakes in JV assets — reportedly as much as 30 to 35 per cent — would put Nigeria’s oil sector in the hands of foreigners and private individuals, weaken the NNPCL, and erode efforts to defend the naira.

Currently, the Federal Government holds between 55 and 60 per cent of JV assets through the NNPCL. The unions argued that reducing this stake would harm long-term economic security, bankrupt the NNPCL, impair its ability to meet obligations such as salaries and welfare, and shrink its contributions to the national budget.

“The NNPCL manages JV assets on behalf of the Federation. Every oil well belongs to the Nigerian people collectively, not just the Federal Government. If these stakes are sold, the federation loses, and the national oil company will be too weak to deliver,” Osifo said.

The unions also accused the Ministry of Finance of attempting to remove the Ministry of Petroleum from joint ownership of the NNPCL. They warned that proposed amendments to the PIA would strip the company of its core national role, scare away investors, and send negative signals about Nigeria’s policy consistency.

“The PIA was passed after years of struggle. Investors are just beginning to adapt to it. Now, the government wants to amend it again? That is a dangerous signal,” Akporeha said.

Both unions vowed to resist any attempt to implement the alleged plan and urged the government to halt any proposed amendments to the PIA.

“Whoever mooted this idea, whether from the Ministry of Petroleum, Ministry of Finance, NNPCL, or even the Presidency itself, we reject it 100 per cent. It will make NNPCL bankrupt in a few years. We will not allow that to happen,” Osifo maintained.

Akporeha added: “When laws are inconsistent, they scare away investment. The investors are just beginning to understand the PIA, and suddenly government wants to change it again.”

Isak Scores First Liverpool Goal In League Cup Win, Chelsea Survive Scare

0

Alexander Isak opened his Liverpool account to inspire a 2-1 victory over Southampton in the League Cup third round, while Chelsea narrowly avoided an upset against third-tier Lincoln on Tuesday.

Isak, making his third appearance since completing a British record £125 million move from Newcastle on transfer deadline day, netted in the 43rd minute after Federico Chiesa intercepted a poor pass from Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and squared for the Sweden striker to fire home. The goal was a belated birthday present for Isak, who turned 26 on Sunday.

The forward, who had scored for Newcastle in their League Cup final win over Liverpool last season, was substituted at half-time as he builds fitness following a disrupted pre-season.

Championship side Southampton equalised in the 76th minute through Shea Charles, who finished from close range after a wayward header from Wataru Endo. Substitute Hugo Ekitike spared Liverpool a penalty shootout, finishing off Chiesa’s pass in the 85th minute before being sent off for a second bookable offence after taking off his shirt in celebration.

Liverpool have now won seven straight matches this season — five in the Premier League, one in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid, and this League Cup tie — under new boss Arne Slot.

Chelsea Survive Scare
Chelsea came from behind to edge past Lincoln 2-1 after a defensive error gifted the third-tier side the lead in the 42nd minute. Ivan Varfolomeev intercepted a careless pass from Enzo Fernandez inside the Blues’ penalty area, heading on to Rob Street, who slotted past Filip Jorgensen.

Enzo Maresca’s side equalised three minutes after the break through Tyrique George’s half-volley off the post. Facundo Buonanotte completed the comeback in the 50th minute with a dazzling solo run and finish.

Elsewhere, Burnley crashed to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to third-tier Cardiff, Wolves beat Everton 2-0 to lift the gloom at Molineux, Brighton thrashed Barnsley 6-0 thanks to Diego Gomez’s four goals, and Fulham edged Cambridge 1-0 with an Emile Smith Rowe strike.
