As denomination marks 175 years in Nigeria, cleric demands urgent action on killings
The President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Rev. Dr. Israel Akanji, has called for an extraordinary national security conference involving all living former heads of state, current security chiefs, and intelligence leaders to develop an emergency response to Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
The cleric made the appeal Thursday during events heralding the denomination’s 112th Annual Convention and 175th anniversary celebrations in Lagos. His proposal outlines a non-partisan crisis intervention:
Summit Composition:
- All former Presidents/Heads of State
- Serving Security Chiefs (Military, Police, DSS, NIA)
- State Governors from high-risk regions
- Traditional and religious leaders
Critical Issues to Address:
- Immediate cessation of mass burials in Plateau, Benue, Katsina and other crisis zones
- Judicial reforms for accelerated terrorism prosecutions
- Finalizing constitutional amendments for state policing
- New counterinsurgency coordination framework
Rev. Akanji’s stark assessment noted: “We’re reaping the consequences of a compromised security architecture inherited by this administration. When communities bury dozens after each attack, we’ve crossed into moral emergency territory.”
The Baptist leader specifically referenced recent massacres in Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, and Bassa while condemning the “business-as-usual” response to nationwide terror. His proposal echoes growing demands for unconventional solutions, including:
✓ 24-Hour Special Courts to try arrested bandits
✓ Military-Community Early Warning Systems
✓ Sanctions on Security Saboteurs
While commending Tinubu’s economic reforms attracting foreign investment, Akanji urged “policies with more human face” to alleviate citizen suffering. The denomination pledged to mobilize its 15 million members nationwide in support of decisive security actions.
Historical Context:
The appeal comes as Nigerian Baptists celebrate 175 years of missionary work, with the April 26-30 convention expected to draw over 50,000 delegates to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway venue. Security has been heightened for the gathering following intelligence reports of possible threats.
What Next?
Presidential spokespersons haven’t responded to the proposal, but sources indicate the National Security Council may discuss the clergy’s recommendations at its next meeting. Meanwhile, the Baptist convention will feature special prayers for national stability alongside its anniversary events.
