Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences with the party’s current direction.
In a letter dated July 14 and addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku described the decision as “heartbreaking” but necessary. He expressed concern that the party had drifted from its founding principles and values.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the Party,” Atiku wrote. “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.”
He added, “As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision. However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Atiku concluded his letter by wishing the party and its leadership success in the future.
A key figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey, Atiku served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo. He contested for the presidency under the PDP in 2019 and 2023 and has been a central player in the party’s evolution since its formation in 1998.
His resignation marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape, with speculations already mounting about his next move.
