AS Roma has sacked head coach and club icon Daniele De Rossi following a poor start to the Serie A season.
The 41-year-old former midfielder, who took over from Jose Mourinho just eight months ago, was dismissed after Roma failed to secure a win in their first four matches, leaving them near the relegation zone.
In a statement, Roma said De Rossi had been “relieved of his duties” in the best interest of the club, as they aim to get back on track with the season still in its early stages.
The club is currently 16th in the league, with only three points from four matches.
De Rossi, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006 and a Roma legend was handed the coaching role despite limited managerial experience.
He initially revitalized the team, leading them to the Europa League semi-finals last season. However, after a strong start, Roma’s form declined, and they missed out on Champions League qualification.
Italian media have speculated that Ivan Juric and Massimiliano Allegri are potential candidates to take over as Roma’s new head coach.
