Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been awarded the prestigious International Peace Award by the Global Peace Movement International in recognition of his contributions to global diplomacy and parliamentary excellence.
In a statement issued by the organisation, Akpabio was celebrated for his exceptional leadership as an Executive Member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and for playing a pivotal role in restoring Nigeria’s membership in the union — a seat the country had lost for over five decades.
“This distinction is a testament to his exceptional leadership and vision,” the statement read. “His pivotal role in restoring Nigeria’s IPU membership is a monumental achievement that showcases his dedication to reinstating Nigeria’s prominent position on the global stage.”
The organisation lauded Akpabio’s efforts in promoting peace, unity, and international cooperation, describing him as a transformative figure in Nigeria’s diplomatic and legislative spaces.
The award will officially be presented to the Senate President in August 2025.
According to the Global Peace Movement International, the honour also acknowledges Akpabio’s lasting impact on global engagement and his influence in shaping a new generation of leaders committed to peace and unity.
