The Senate has commenced consideration of two executive bills transmitted by President Bola Tinubu aimed at reforming Nigeria’s criminal justice system and strengthening the administration of public senior secondary education.
The first bill seeks to repeal the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and replace it with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2026, while the second proposes amendments to the National Secondary Education Commission Act.
Reading the President’s correspondence during plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the proposed ACJA 2026 is intended to modernise criminal justice administration in the Federal Capital Territory and other federal courts by addressing gaps identified in the implementation of the 2015 law.
Akpabio also informed lawmakers that the National Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026 was approved by the Federal Executive Council before being transmitted to the Senate. He explained that the bill seeks to strengthen the administration, governance and oversight of public senior secondary education to improve educational standards nationwide.
Both bills have been referred to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for legislative processing. The committee is expected to report on the education amendment bill within one week, while the proposed Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2026 is expected to return to the Senate within four weeks for further consideration.
