The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic efforts to protect Nigerians in South Africa following the reported killing of two citizens amid renewed xenophobic attacks.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, who expressed concern over the rising cases of xenophobic attacks, extrajudicial killings and alleged persecution of Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.

Leading the debate, Gagdi urged the Federal Government to summon the South African High Commissioner, demand an independent investigation into the killings, strengthen consular support for Nigerians and engage regional and international organisations to ensure justice and accountability.

Contributing to the debate, lawmakers commended ongoing efforts to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa but insisted that stronger diplomatic and legal measures were needed to protect citizens and hold those responsible accountable. They also urged the government to explore international legal options and seek compensation for victims.

The House, however, rejected a proposal to suspend diplomatic relations with South Africa, maintaining that continued engagement remains the most effective approach to resolving the crisis.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas recalled Nigeria’s role in the anti-apartheid struggle and described the attacks on Nigerians as unacceptable, while reaffirming that diplomacy remains the preferred path to addressing the situation.

The motion was adopted and referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs for further legislative action.
