Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to either resign or refrain from seeking re-election in 2027, citing the administration’s handling of school abductions and the worsening security situation across the country.
In a statement, Obi said the continued captivity of schoolchildren abducted in Oyo State for more than 50 days reflects a failure of leadership and compassion.
He disclosed that during a visit to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, he learnt that President Tinubu had not personally contacted the governor over the abduction, describing the development as deeply troubling.
Obi said insecurity should not be treated as a partisan issue, stressing that the safety of citizens must remain the government’s highest priority.
He also compared the current situation with the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction in 2014, recalling that President Tinubu had criticised the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan over its response at the time.
The former Anambra State governor alleged that more than 13 school abductions have occurred since the current administration assumed office, arguing that the government’s response has failed to reassure Nigerians or demonstrate sufficient concern for victims and their families.
He urged the Federal Government to prioritise the rescue of abducted persons, strengthen national security and restore public confidence in the country’s ability to protect lives and property.
