Australia Defeats China 2-0, Moves Closer to World Cup Qualification

Date:

Hangzhou, China – Australia strengthened its bid for automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a decisive 2-0 victory over China in their Group C clash on Tuesday.

The Socceroos, fresh off a 5-1 thrashing of Indonesia last week, now sit second in the group with 13 points—three ahead of Saudi Arabia—and a significantly superior goal difference. The top two teams secure direct entry to the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Australia dominated early, with Jackson Irvine breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute after capitalizing on defensive errors. The midfielder collected a rebound, evaded two challenges, and curled a left-footed shot past Chinese goalkeeper Wang Dalei.

China’s hopes suffered another blow when Wang committed a costly mistake, fumbling Nishan Velupillay’s tame effort into the net just before the half-hour mark.

The hosts introduced naturalized Brazilian-born striker Serginho (Sai Erjiniao) at halftime, but his powerful long-range attempt was tipped over by Australian keeper Mathew Ryan. Despite late pressure from China, ranked 64 places below Australia, the Socceroos held firm to secure the win.

China remains bottom of the group with six points but still has a slim chance to advance to the next qualifying round if they finish third or fourth. Their final matches include an away fixture against Indonesia and a home game against Bahrain.

Australia, meanwhile, faces a tense finish to their campaign with a home match against group leaders Japan and an away clash against Saudi Arabia in June.
