Cristiano Ronaldo may have left European club football when he signed a €200 million per year record deal with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr but the Portuguese’s European glory may yet be far from over.
Making a return to the Uefa Champions League could still be possible for the highest goal scorer in the competition’s history as there is a clause in his contract with Al Nassr that allows for this.
Spanish media outlet, Marca, reports an agreement between the Real Madrid legend and Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund — the owners of Premier League club, Newcastle United that allows Ronaldo to join Newcastle United on loan, provided the club qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, as the Magpies, currently sitting third on the league table, aim to finish in the top four.
The move would give Ronaldo a chance to reinforce his status as the highest goal-scorer in the competition with 140 goals, as new World Cup winner, Lionel Messi trails with just 11 goals.
Cristiano Ronaldo also holds the record for the all-time highest appearance in the competition with 183 in total, across three top clubs including Manchester United (59), Real Madrid (101), and Juventus (23).
