No fewer than 13 people lost their lives following the collapse of a mining site in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident, which occurred last Saturday, was confirmed by Dr. Joshua Riti, Chairman of Bassa LGA, during a press briefing in Jos on Monday.
The mining site, situated at the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs, caved in, leading to the tragic loss of lives.
Dr. Riti expressed deep sorrow over the incident, noting that seven of the victims were from Bassa LGA.
“This is truly a heartbreaking tragedy. “These young individuals were simply trying to earn a livelihood in the face of the economic challenges we all face. Sadly, they met an untimely end while striving to make a better life for themselves and their families,” Riti lamented.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved families, acknowledging the devastating impact of the loss.
Reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) indicate that most of the victims were youths, aged between 18 and 30 years, who had gone to the site in search of economic opportunities.
